Artist's impression of Edge Lane West

The Edge Lane highways and environmental improvements will be carried out in four phases. Work is scheduled to start week commencing April 18th 2006 on the first phase which will be focussed on part of Edge Lane Central (ELC 1), between the former Marconi complex junction and the junction with Botanic Road.

science and innovation parkWork on Edge Lane Central 1 will include new kerbs, paving, street lighting, improved pedestrian crossing facilities, resurfacing of the existing highway, new feature lighting and tree planting. This phase will also include a new entrance to the proposed science and innovation park on the site of the former MTL bus depot.

Improvements to Edge Lane Drive are expected to start in late spring. Work from 'M62 Rocket Junction' to Rathbone Road will include re-landscaping the central reservation, the removal of the concrete footbridge, pedestrian crossing improvements and the closure of the opening in the central reservation at Domville Road - a well-known accident blackspot - to facilitate highway realignment and enhance safety.

The final phase of work takes place on Edge Lane West and is the most ambitious and extensive. It is due to start on site in the autumn subject to the conclusion of due statutory process. The works, from Botanic Road to Hall Lane, include major highway improvements to remove the traffic bottleneck at St. Cyprian's Church by realigning the road, widening it to dual carriageway and introducing a central reservation, creating dedicated right turns, providing better pedestrian crossing facilities and improved access to Kensington Junior and Infant Schools and the Life Bank (Sure Start) centre.
